During/While

"During" is used to describe when something happens in relation to another event, while "while" is used to describe two actions happening at the same time. 
Usage 
During
Used with a noun to describe when something happens in relation to another event. For example, "I went skiing several times during the winter".
While
Used with a clause or sentence to describe two actions happening at the same time. For example, "I took the kids to school while she was at work".
Grammatical function 
During: A preposition that is followed by a noun phrase.
While: A conjunction that is followed by a verb phrase.
Examples 
"I fell asleep during the film"
"I fell asleep while I was watching the film"
Related words 
"Throughout" is used in a similar way to "during", but it implies that the first action happens for the whole time of the second.
