Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee
Dr. Syama Prasad Mookerjee was a visionary nationalist leader and an architect of modern Indian politics. Born in 1901 to the illustrious Sir Asutosh Mookerjee, he was a brilliant academician who became the youngest Vice-Chancellor of Calcutta University in 1934. He led the Hindu homeland movement to ensure the entry of West Bengal in India during the partition of 1947. Following India's independence, he served with distinction as the nation's first Minister for Industry and Supply. However, due to severe ideological differences over the Nehru-Liaquat Pact and Kashmir policy, he resigned from the cabinet. In 1951, he founded the Bharatiya Jana Sangh to promote national unity. He strongly opposed the special status of Jammu and Kashmir, demanding its complete integration with India. While protesting against entry restrictions into the state, he was arrested by local authorities. His tragic demise in detention on June 23, 1953, marked the end of a glorious era, leaving behind an irreplaceable void and a legacy of fierce patriotism.
