Pronunciation
The English language has 24 consonant sounds, including six stops, two affricatives, the nasals, the lateral, the postalveolar, and the semivowels. 
Grammar
English has complex grammar. For example, the word "to dust" can have two opposite meanings. 
Receptiveness
English is receptive to adopting words from other languages. For example, the word "alligator" comes from the Spanish word el lagarto, which means "the lizard". 
Influence
The English language has been influenced by other languages, such as Old Norse. For example, the third person pronoun group beginning with "th-" (they, them, their) was influenced by Old Norse. 
Global reach
English is spoken as a first or second language in many countries and is the official language of 67 countries. This makes it an important language for international communication and business.
