India in Paralympics 2024
The Paralympic Games or Paralympics is the largest international event for disabled athletes and societal change and take place shortly after every Olympic Games in the same host city. The Paralympic Games are held every two years – alternating between the summer and winter Paralympic Games.
The 2024 Paralympics took place from August 28 to September 8, 2024, and were held at iconic venues in Paris, including the Eiffel Tower, the Château de Versailles, and the Grand Palais. India's performance at the 2024 Summer Paralympics in Paris was a historic success, with the country winning a record 29medals. India's 29 medals included seven gold, nine silver, and 13 bronze. This surpassed India's previous best of 19 medals at the 2020 Tokyo Paralympics. India's 84 athletes competed in 12 sports, marking the country's largest Paralympic team ever. Indian athletes broke world, Paralympic, and Asian records. For example, Sumit Antil set a new Paralympic record in javelin throw, and Avani Lekhara surpassed her own Paralympic record in women's 10m air rifle. India's success was the result of government initiatives like the Khelo India program and the Target Olympic Podium Scheme (TOPS). TOPS provides support to India's top athletes, including an Out-of-Pocket Allowance (OPA) and funding for personalized training plans. India's Paralympic athletes have inspired people in grassroots communities to participate in sports.
