Tragedy in Taratala: 16 Dead in Kolkata Warehouse Collapse
By a Staff Reporter
Kolkata, June 25, 2026: An under-construction warehouse roof collapsed at Transport Depot Road in Taratala, South Kolkata yesterday at about 12.05 PM, trapping numerous contract labourers during concrete casting. The incident resulted in 16 fatalities and 17 injuries, prompting a joint rescue operation involving the NDRF, SDRF, and the Indian Army, followed by the arrest of six individuals under the Bharatiya Nyaya Sanhita (BNS). A Special Investigation Team (SIT) is investigating the collapse caused by structural failure, leading the Chief Minister to halt Kolkata Municipal Corporation (KMC) building approvals for safety audits. The report highlights severe lapses in construction safety standards. West Bengal and Central governments announced financial aid for the Taratala warehouse incident, with the state providing ₹10 lakh per deceased and ₹1 lakh for injured individuals. Additionally, the Central Government (PMNRF) is providing ₹2 lakh per deceased and ₹50,000 for injured victims.
