Meanings and simple examples for some complex prepositions:

1. by means of

  • Meaning: With the help of; using a specific method, tool, or object.
  • Example: He opened the locked door by means of a hairclip.

2. apart from

  • Meaning: Except for; besides; excluding something.
  • Example: Apart from English, she speaks fluent French.

3. in case of

  • Meaning: If a particular event or situation happens (usually for emergencies or precautions).
  • Example: In case of fire, use the stairs instead of the elevator.

4. in connection with

  • Meaning: Related to, regarding, or concerning a specific matter/event.
  • Example: Two men were questioned in connection with the robbery.

5. in charge of

  • Meaning: Having responsibility, control, or supervision over someone or something.
  • Example: She is in charge of organizing the annual school program.

6. for the sake of

  • Meaning: For the benefit, interest, or good of someone or something.
  • Example: They decided to stay together for the sake of their children.

7. in contrast to

  • Meaning: Compared with something that has very different or opposite qualities.
  • Example: In contrast to her energetic sister, Maya is quiet and calm.

8. by virtue of

  • Meaning: Because of or as a result of a particular power, status, or cause.
  • Example: She got the promotion by virtue of her hard work and dedication.

9. in terms of

  • Meaning: Regarding a specific aspect, angle, or unit of measurement.
  • Example: The project was a success in terms of quality, but not in terms of cost.

10. with reference to

  • Meaning: Regarding or concerning a specific topic/subject (often used in formal or official communication).
  • Example: I am writing with reference to your recent job application.

11. on top of

  • Meaning: In addition to something (often something bad happening on top of another problem, or physically above something).
  • Example: On top of missing the bus, I lost my wallet.

12. as well as

  • Meaning: In addition to; and also.
  • Example: The teacher as well as the students joined the tree plantation drive.

13. in addition to

  • Meaning: Besides; along with extra items or factors.
  • Example: In addition to his salary, he receives a monthly travel bonus.

14. in the light of

  • Meaning: Taking into consideration new information, facts, or circumstances.
  • Example: In the light of recent weather warnings, the trip has been postponed.

15. in exchange for

  • Meaning: In return for giving or doing something else; a swap.
  • Example: He gave me his bicycle in exchange for my old camera.
